We have created a collection of traditional, handmade woven wall hangings in collaboration with the Lopez Martinez family and craftsman Arturo Lopez Martinez of Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Each piece is unique and takes more than eight weeks to complete, continuing weaving traditions passed down through generations.
The wool is carefully cleaned before being spun by hand into yarn. The yarn is then hand-dyed using centuries-old techniques, with natural ingredients steeped in boiling water to slowly release their pigments. Herbs, fruits, insects and flowers are used to create the rich and varied colours found throughout traditional Zapotec weaving.
Once dyed, the yarn is woven by hand into each unique wall hanging using techniques passed down from generation to generation.
As each tapestry is individually woven and naturally dyed, subtle variations in colour, texture and design are to be expected. These differences are part of the character and beauty of each piece.
